The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) in the UK and ATEX in Europe require employers to control risks to safety from fire and explosions.

Explosions can cause loss of life and serious injuries, as well as significant damage. DSEAR obliges employers and the self-employed to protect people against safety risks caused by fire, explosions and similar incidents in the workplace, including the general public that can be endangered by their work.
