i.safe MOBILE has been providing its customers with the App World on the 5G radio IS440.1 since the end of June 2024 and on the IS440.M1 since end of the year 2024 - an internet-based platform for various application software (applications or apps) that was developed by the i.safe MOBILE software team. With the App World, i.safe MOBILE offers its customers an uncomplicated and fast way to download and install pre-tested apps for the IS440.x. The App World is pre-installed on all IS440.x 5G radio devices. It is free of charge and there is no account necessary.
Where can I find the i.safe MOBILE App World?
The App World is pre-installed on the IS440.x 5G radio and can be found on the home screen. As with other operatings systems, the user can change the position of the App World icon at any time.
You can view the App World terms of use here.
Which apps are available in the App World?
The following MDM and Push-To-Talk solutions are currently provided by selected solution partners:
- InstantTalk PTT from Mobile Tornado
- T.Flex from TASSTA
- Team on the run (TOTR) from Streamwide
- Fleet Client from Swiftcom
- Safe UEM
- PTT Walkie Talkie from Zello
The integration of other applications in the App World is possible and further applications will be made available step by step.
The App World is easy to use and is similar to other digital application platforms. Tap the icon on the home screen to start the App World. Another tap on one of the four apps opens further information on the app. Then, you can start the download. You need a licence from the app provider to use the apps. The licence must be purchased from the respective app provider. Existing licences can still be used under certain circumstances. You can find further information on this from the respective app provider.
What is Push-To-Talk over Cellular used for?
PoC/PTToC stands for Push-to-Talk over Cellular. It refers to a communication technology that allows users to instantly communicate with others using a device with a PTT button to initiate a voice call, similar to traditional two-way radios. PoC leverages cellular networks, such as LTE or 5G, rather than dedicated radio frequencies, enabling broader coverage and enhanced features due broadband like group calling, high accuracy GPS location tracking, video calls and multimedia file sharing.
The i.safe MOBILE devices are equipped with PTT key, supporting 3rd party applications for PTT solutions and lone worker protection.
- Easy to use
- Fast communication
- Low costs
Migration from DMR/TETRA to 4G/5G
By using a gateway, the user can integrate the existing PMR communications based on VHF or UHF into the new technology based on 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi® networks, running on i.safe MOBILE devices, as e.g. IS440.x. The i.safe MOBILE Product Manager for PoC Solutions Leandro Petrone explains in a video one possible way to easily integrate PoC with existing PMR communications.
Using conventional radio devices, communication is only possible over a limited distance according to the coverage in an industrial plant. By interposing a Radio over IP (RoIP) gateway in combination with a donor conventional radio device connected, communication with 4G and 5G push to talk devices, interconnecting both technologies and increasing the limited distance and capabilities, is easily possible.
Benefits like Push-to-Video (PTV) and Emergency Alerts are shown in the i.safe MOBILE video about connecting conventional radio devices with 5G devices.
Since the PoC devices, unlike the PMRs, also support Wi-Fi® communications, they can seamlessly log into the Wi-Fi® network indoors - with limited 4G/5G coverage.
Outdoors, the devices then automatically switch back to 4G/5G of commercial carriers or even better, to your own private LTE/5G infrastructure.
This results in lower costs: Using an existing 5G network instead of investing capital in the infrastructure required for wide-area radio networks and dedicated frequencies rentals, along with the costs associated with each PoC device, is considerably lower than with a DMR/TETRA conventional device, and a great way to start switching to the new communications technology.
Why is the App World available on the IS440.x device?
As IS440.1 and IS440.M1 run on the "ISM-OS" operating system, the App World is a user-friendly way to download and use apps quickly and easily. Regarding other GMS devices in the i.safe MOBILE product portfolio, customers still have access to the Google Play Store.
Security
The App World is hosted on a dedicated i.safe MOBILE application server located in Germany. As the App World is part of the firmware of IS440.x, we keep it up to date with every firmware update. The firmware update contains bug fixes and security patches. The user receives a push notification about new firmware updates in the usual way. As soon as a new version is available, the apps can be updated directly in the App World under "Updates".
All applications within the App World are tested by i.safe MOBILE and the respective solution partner for functionality, compatibility, security and reliability before being included. All solution partners listed in the App World have received an IS440.x demo device in advance for software trials and extensive testing. All functions of the application in combination with the IS440.x could thus be continuously tested and adapted, if necessary.
